Ukrainian hryvna or hryvnia (UAH) is the official currency of Ukraine, introduced in 1996. It was named after a currency used in medieval Kievan Rus’. “Griva” is a Slavic word that means “mane.” The bundle of silver or gold pieces were worn around the neck and were used as means of payment, thus compared with a mane.
